I am not sure about your state, but mine requires a minimum on liability which is 25/50/25 and 25/50 on uninsured motorists. I would suggest going with a higher liability that is going to cover your personal assets in the event someone sues you. For example, if you have a house valued at $100,000 I would go with a liability of 250/300/250 And as far as the deductibles I go with $100 on comp and $500 on collision, but that is up to you unless your lien requires a minimum. You can also add underinsured motorists. And you will want some medical expense, I would go with no less than $5000 on med payments.

look at it this way. insurance is needed to protect your assets in the event of an accident. Most states require a minium coverage. If you have few assets the minium is ok, if you own property a business or have many assets you need to protect them, sometimes you can have on your homeowners what they call an umbrella liability coverage which covers your car.

Let's look at a scenario: you lose control on a wet road and slam into a 2007 Benz E550 head-on which spins into a parked 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, totaling all three cars and sending the four passengers of the Benz to the hospital, each with cracked ribs, sprained necks, and black eyes from multiple air bag deployment. The hospital does an MRI on all of them, they all spend two days in the hospital and all will have follow-up therapy for four weeks plus medications. Just to put it all in perspective, the Mercedes will cost $66,800.00 to replace.
If you only have 25/50/25 coverage, you will have to sell your home and work two jobs for years just to pay the settlement.
How much DO you need?

Find out the your local (state law) requires you carry -- that will be the minimum you should get. Later, if you feel like you need more insurance, you can maybe get a discount, because you already have a policy.
