Does smoking actually change your voice? Like does it make you sound huskier? I smoke and wonder if it's a probability that eventually my voice will sound scratchier/huskier.

There's woman on my job who sounds like a man with a bad cold. Yet she continues to take smoke breaks all day long and she is always coughing but she's not sick.

I can only imagine what it's doing to the lungs.

The pitch of your voice changes if you smoke, because the smoke is an irritant for the vocal cords, and it makes them swell. The cough associated with smoking can have the same effect, by causing the vocal cords to bang together. So, you're setting yourself up for a vicious cycle. Be aware that a change in a smoker's voice can also be a symptom of cancer of the larynx (voice box). Be sure to get checked out by an ENT if it happens to you.

Oh yes, I know a few women with this problem. It has gotten worse over the years. Their voices become very course. Some so bad they sound like some men's voice.

Yes it does. I can't sing anymore. I'm always trying to clear my throat and my voice does sound a little raspy. It's not really that noticeable, but I can hear it. I don't sound like one of Marge Simpsons sisters or anything, but yes it does change your voice.

It does change your voice and in the long run, it can alter your breathing patterns, too.
