This one time, i disagree with santana. I have been a boxing fan for many years, and yes, it is brutal. Anyone who has watched arturo gatti and micky ward duke it out for rounds and rounds know that boxing is a brutal sport. Anyone who saw the golden boy mutilate chavez would say the same thing. Not to mention the nasty gash lennox lewis gave vitali kitchko or the HUGE mouse he gave hassim rachman. How could tyson's cannibalistic episode not be considered brutal, or golata punching a guy in the gonads three times and inciting a riot, not brutal.
Most real boxing fans don't crave this stuff, we like the good matchups, the strategies, the phenomenal knock outs, we like watching fights. Personally I don't love I big bloody gash or some of the more "Brutal" aspects of the fight, but to say that the sweet science isn't brutal I would have to be in denial. Brutal is a relative term, too. Lots of guys (and gals) who have been watching boxing for years and years (or have boxed) are desensithesized to many of the actions that would turn a cheerleader's stomach. In other words, one person's brutal may not necessarily be another person's brutal. Hope this sheds some light and gives a different angle. Good question, thanks

The general public only hears about boxing when it's something brutal. One of the boxing moments that most people still remember is Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield's ear. If boxing clips are shown on tv, it's only the most brutal parts of the fight. Movies like Rocky highlight strength rather than skill. The faces are all bruised and bloody. People remember it when they hear that a boxer has died due to ring injuries. And very few pay much attention to boxing other than that. Unfortunately, boxing's less brutal aspects don't draw much attention.

The People that think boxing is brutal, don't know anything about the sport, they couldn't tell you a hook from a cross or a uppercut from a jab. These very same people that think that boxing is so brutal, probably support the death penalty.

many people think that boxing is brutal because it can be very violent...and as a result the fighters always come back bruised and bloody

The only thing they can see is the violence, whereas we boxing fans see it as a sport like basketball or soccer (only I don't like basketball and soccer because they have no special meaning to me).

It's rough physically, but more importantly it is a thinking man's game.
