I started smoking of my own when I was around 24 year old and nobody forced me to smoke. During initial days, I used to get kicks but this faded away slowly day by day and then there never used to be kicks while smoking and slowly it became a habit. I was almost like a good smoker and I never counted about how many cigarettes I have smoked in a day. After I have smoked for almost 25 years, I decided to quit after knowing that it is really bad for health and also thinking that God has been very kind to me to have given sufficient time to smoke without any sickness. I quit smoking on a particular day seven years ago from now and this is purely because of my stong will power. There is no medicine available on earth that can make a person quit smoking. It is the strong will-power that helps to get rid of bad habit. The Nature has given tobacco to mankind for medicinal use but the humans have used it for intoxication. Tobacco even in small quantity consumed is bad for health. For an example, when you smoke, the smoke is thrown out by the body and it is an indication that the body can not tolerate its contents. Same way, when the tobacco is consumed by chewing, the person has to spit many times before gulping the same because the body tells the person that it is not good for health and through it out of the body. Even the animals never ever enter a tobacco field for gazing, whereas humans have consumes uncounted tons of tobacco since generations. Now, I enjoy a very healthy life and save lots of money spent on tobacco products. My family is also very proud of me. No one can minimize smoking gradually because it is very difficult in practical and it has to be done once for all. After I have quit smoking, I never gained weight since this is a wrong judgment as regards quitting smoking. I am sure that this piece of real information will help you in your school project. I remember smoking just a bit off of the ends of some cigarettes that were laying around just to see what it was all about. They were gross, and it did nothing for me other than tasting bad. Then, for whatever reason, I took a whole one (an ULTRA light, which is like sucking dirty air), smoked half of it and it made me throw up. That was four years ago, and now I smoke full-flavored menthols. Just that one (that made me SICK, no less) was all it took. I smoked either my mom's ultra-lights or my dad's Marlboro reds (ACK!) until I was old enough to try some other kinds. I remember the first time I smoked a Newport, I got so lightheaded that I almost fell over. Smoking too many too quickly now makes me throw up. I only smoke about a pack in a week, which is pretty damn good, I think. Not as good as not smoking any, of course.
I do wish I could quit. I hate buying them and I hate smoking them. That's really the only reason, I'm not worried about getting sick just yet, because, despite what all of those commercials tell you, you have to smoke a *LOT* to get sick. But the withdrawl, even after just a few hours, sucks so bad that I'm afraid to try to quit. I get really mad at everything when I don't have any cigarettes, and there's this weird feeling in my throat. It's pretty terrible.
My dad quit when he had to have (non-smoking-related) heart surgery a few years ago. My mom quit a while ago, when she was pregnant with me or whatever, and I remember one night we were all sitting outside, my dad was smoking, and my mom took ONE puff, ran inside threw up, and she's been smoking ever sense. I must have been six or seven then, and I'm 20 now.
One more thing I should add just because - Hey, kids, don't do it. I think pretty much every smoker out there with a brain will tell you that it's no good. Nobody LIKES being addicted to these things, and it's the hardest thing in the world to quit.

I've been smoking for so long I don't even remember my first cigarette. I would like to quit and believe I will one day but I'm just not ready right now. Last year I had my doctor give me a perscription for Wellbutrin (many people have had great success with this drug) I was doing really well, down to 4 cigarettes a day, and then I started having some really weird side effects from the drug and had to quit taking it. I think when I finally quit, it will just have to be "cold turkey" lay them down and say that's enough. Hope this helps you for your project.

Yes I want to quit... again. Someday. I have quit twice (for a year and almost a year) and started again due to being surrounded by other smokers and having a weak moment..
I quit those two times for my health, and the next time I do it it will be for that reason as well. This next time, will be my last.

I felt a little lightheaded my first time. It was hard to breathe without coughing. You would think that it would have been the end of it right? No such luck! I would like to quit, but I don't want to be one of those people who have to be cut out of their homes because they weigh 500 lbs. Every time I've tried to quit I gained weight. I was given my first cigarrette by my aunt she's only a few years older. She made me smoke it because she didn't want me to tell on her. She's only got 1 lung now, but she still smokes. I still smoke too.

I really did because my friends would, now i am hooked...it was a social thing, like when we go out to bars, partys or whatever, u know we all took a smoking break.
i want to quit, but its harder said than done. I try not to buy packs anymore. I buy a pack once a month now, and have a cig, when i really feel stressed or when i feel that i have to fight the urge. my goal is to make the pack last two, three, four months until i dont need it anymore.

Sure when I first started ciggarettes were fifty cents a pack and a lot stronger than now.The very first time I puffed on a ciggy, I became very dizzy and felt a "Buzz" from the nicotine.Years later they are eght times as expensive and for some not including myself mornings start out with heavy coughing and very difficult to breath. Both of my grandparents and my father were on oxygen from emphysema and both grandparents have since died and father is barely hanging on from so many years of it. Does this answer your question?
