Lately I have been hounded by sales people..everywhere I go
Today I went to my tanning salon and a guy working was trying to sell me a $100 bottle of tanning loition. I told him "no thank you, I am not interested" he still went on..so I said "no I am not spending $100 on tanning lotion" so he tells me he will take half now and half later.....AGhhhh I try to be nice to people but gosh I always get hounded and even when I say no they still bother me.
What is the best way to deal with people like this??

Nancy Reagan had a popular anti drug campaign in the 80's. "Just say No". Well the issue you have right now is that you are being too nice.

You do not have to be mean. Just say no. Don't give them explaination or any room to continue the conversation. NO will suffice when you say it with authority. Any continued conversation is room to keep turning the NO into a yes.

They gave you the offer you said NO.. your obligation to continue conversation is over.

So Just say no and keep it moving

Isn't it terrible? People like you and I try to be polite, but firm, and some people still don't get it. What sometimes works for me with these pushy so and so's is deflecting the sales pitch. One technique: Gee, that sounds like a great product for my friend Jane. Why don't you give me your card and I'll send her in? Another technique, if the person is totally obnoxious, is to try to get them to buy something from you: That product sounds great, but I sell something similar through Amway. Why don't I run out to the car and talk to you about our product line? Maybe we can set up an Amway display right here at the tanning salon!

Good luck, and remember, it always pays to be polite!

Sales reps are commission based. That is their livlihood, therefore they will not turn away by a single rejection. The trick is, say your polite "Thank you, I'm not interested." and walk away. If you stay there, they will keep trying to push you to sell. Salesmen know that one very good way to make a sell is by pressuring the customer. If you are not in the position to leave, then let then this is a good reply,

"I would appreciate it if you would leave me be as I am not interested."

It's polite, direct and unabrasive.

What has worked for me in these situations is to be firm that the product is not right for me. I then wish them good luck with the next person they suggest the product or service to.
