great, question, and a great matchup! Both boxers with incredible hearts, stamina, chins, and skills. But, Pender unfortunately would've busted his hands on Hagler's granite noggin' and that probably would have ended it. Hagler, in four.

Wow Paul Pender, haven't seen that name in some time. He is one of the "forgotten" champions. Pender's career was up and down primarily due to his propensity to break his hands(40W-6L 2D w20KOs). At one point after losing by KO, he stepped away from boxing and joined the USMC (me too lol).

But, even the Corps couldn't keep him and he was Medically Discharged because of all the pain he suffered in his hands. So, what do you do if the Marines say you got issues? You go back to fighting again. Very intelligent boxer. If Pender cut you it was a guarantee he'd be zoning in on that cut for the rest of the fight.

Pender lost to Gene Fullmer before either was a champion, a close decision but still an L. After the loss he won 15 straight and found himself the opponent to Sugar Ray Robinson (champ or as Ray liked to be called "the King"). Pender boxed sharply, using the jab and crisp combinations to win via SD. He was now the Middleweight Champ, defeating Ray again in the rematch by the same result (Ray was slow by this time).

The biggest issue I have with Pender is that when he was champ he only fought 3 fighters SRR 2x, Basilo (great fight) once and Terry Downes 3x. I just think with all the great Middleweights out during that time he could have fought at least 2 other good fighters (Dick Tiger especially).

Pender was the first man to drop Carmen Basilio. Their fight was a slug fest, Basilio's face looked like it had been put thru a grinder. CB said in the post fight interview "that Pender is damn quick." Pender did something that is also not common, he walked away from boxing as the Middleweight Champion after regaining it from Downes who won it in their 2nd fight.

All that said, Hagler's relentless attack and pressure would be too much for Pender. Pender would be the boxer and Hagler the slugger, but those brittle hands landing against that bowling ball like hard head of Marvin's would add to Pender's wear and tear. Hagler stops Pender in the 9th or 10th round when his corner throws in the towel. Great question, nice to see a forgotten champ thrown in the mix.
