Many states (New York started on Tuesday) allow you place a credit hold on your account. This prevent accounts from being opened in your name. Don't waste your money on identity theft insurance, it does little to protect you.

At least one, and probably all three, of the major credit reporting agencies have such programs; a typical cost is $12.95 a month. if you don't care to subscribe to one of these (I don't), monitor your credit card statements carefully -- and also your checking account. One of my credit cards is with my local bank, and I can (and do) monitor the account on-line -- as well as pay it on-line.
