Why is it that peeing in the bathroom at work is acceptable even if other people are in there, but we are supposed to feel ashamed of pooping? Where has the negative social stigma come from?

The negative stigma associated with pooping has come from people's shyness and un-acceptedness of their own bodies. Since they cannot be comfortable with their own bodies, they complain publically about other people's bodies and bodily functions. And because we are all supposed to be "polite" to everyone - otherwise we could get SUED for voicing our opinions (some "free" speech we got going here!) - people LIE all the time, all day long.

The answer - dont worry about it. If you gotta poop, then poop.
Public or private. It does not matter. It's a bodily function that people have to get over and accept.

Bring a can of air freshener with you. Clean and spray down the stall when you are done - that will go a long way toward your reputation - they will call you a clean freak instead of "the person who poops"... sheesh....

I don't feel shame for a natural body function, I don't know who told you, you are supposed to be ashamed, but they are wrong.
The only social effect would be if you are overly aromatic. If people make you feel ashamed of this, I think are somewhat childish. In fact, maybe that's where they get their social stigmas, from being poked fun at as a child.

Hey if ya gotta go then go. There is no need to keep clinching your butt cheeks together trying to push it back up. You are asking for a disaster when you do that. No need to hold on to it and keep running around the office with the BUBBLE GUTS letting out all those unpleasant smells. Line the toilet seat and let it flow. As long as it doesn't plop in the toilet for everyone to hear then go for it. :) And don't forget the curtisy flush people.

You're on your own there, who ever told you everyone else was ashamed? Look inward. The only real social stigma attached to this subject is talking about it, tacky.

I think it is supposed to be shameful because most people, guys included sound like they are in the end stages of labor and they scream and grunt, Its like a baby is crowning and the doctor is in there with them to catch it.When I hear someone in the stall next to me let loose with the brown caboose and they are screaming and grunting I have to resist the urge to ask them boy or girl? how much did it weigh and what did they name it.

Ha HA LOL

Our bodily functions are normal to us individuals, if you have to go number 1 or number 2 you gotta go. You should not be ashamed that you have to go poop or pee, it is our bodies way to get rid of wastes that your body doesn't need, that is why our body gets rid of it. so it is no big secret, so, my advice to you and everyone is...KEEP POOPIN

It should be the same as long as u r quiet about it. I almost never go when there is a guy in the next stall. Kinda too close and personal for me

I didn't even know that this was a problem. But couldn't you call it a bowel movement?
