The finished attic rec room in my new home has burnt orange carpeting, which is quite lovely with the aged pine walls and skylight - a very "warm" feeling room, quite ski-lodgey, actually. The walls are angled - as in an attic or a ski lodge - and so are not conducive to hanging artwork. My rec room furniture is red leather, glass and chrome - quite cool and modern. Is there anything I can do to make this furniture work in this room??? Please help - I cannot afford new furniture or carpeting!

Sounds truly eclectic! I'd use retro electronics (clock, radio, telephone) in shades of red, black and chrome.

For some reason tiki comes to mind, maybe because it was popular during the "atomic age". Accesorize the room with some tiki glasses used as a pencil holder, remote control caddy, vase or water glass.

Unique, funky lamps from the 60s in browns and oranges would be pretty.
Search Ebay for inspiration, then head to your local thrift and resale shops.

Use sculptural wall art in place of traditional art on the walls. Again, search ebay for inspiration, then check out your local thrift, resale and furniture stores for something that you like.

Shaggy throw blankets and pillows are really popular right now at department stores. Get them in black, orange or red.

Have fun!

I think that you should put some artwork in that can hang from the angled ceiling, rather than lying flat against a wall. You can attach the top "edge" to the angled ceiling and simply allow it to hang (making sure it is firmly secured, of course). You could even put a different piece of art on each side of a frame, since both sides could be seen. Likewise, you could hang small tapestries or rugs from the ceiling in the same manner - a Navajo-type rug comes to mind, but there are many variations. As to your chrome furniture - how about tossing some throws over it to warm it up without losing the functionality of the furniture? Alternatively, maybe you could find somebody who would like to trade furniture with you - try Craig's List for the city nearest you, and see if someone with "warm" or rustic furniture of similar quality would like to have something more modern. Good luck!

As the former owner of an A-frame home, you hang your pictures from wires. I also think that the red furniture and orange carpet are a bit on the reto 60's look. You can dye your leather furniture black or something different. Good luck with your ski-lodge room.

Well, without seeing what shade of red we're talking about here...

I'm going to suggest right off that bat that you go with some slipcovers for the red leather furniture. Or at least, a nice collection of quilts or throws that you can arrange nicely...

Two other thoughts - any chance there is a decent wood or lino floor under that orange carpet? or how about one or two big area rugs, in earthy colors, over the orange...I'm thinking dark brown would tone down the orange a bit, and still manage to work well with the red, if you don't want to cover it up....

Find some accent colors - like leafy greens and deep violet and a creamy buttery yellow - that you can incorporate into the room in throws, pillows, pottery, artwork, etc.

I think it can be saved...you just have to have faith and experiment! (Don't be afraid to look at thrift stores or garage sales for other furniture, either....sometimes you get some great deals!)

Actually, the furniture/room colors are not uncomplementary, though the chrome and glass factors are a stretch. I suggest trying some area rugs and/or comfy throw pillows or blankets having patterns with similar colors (focus on browns, tans and golds along with the reds and oranges) as accents to bring it all together. Also, a lamp or two that combine the metal & wood elements in their design could be helpful as well.

If you have a "rec room," then does that also mean you have a living room? Have you tried swapping your furniture around? I mean, could you put your chrome stuff in the living room and put some upholstered stuff upstairs? Or you could cover your red leather stuff w throws or blankets (cool ones), accented by those sheepskins from IKEA. That would look very ski-lodge-esque. Maybe you could hang lanterns or a big mobile from the ceiling. They have those at IKEA too.

Pull the carpet and the couch colours together. Find some throw blankets, or crochet or even quilted looking .. with some orange in them for the furniture.. Then a throw rug with some red in it for the floor.. Will look just like you meant to decorate with those colours.

One of those round weaved looking rugs/not sure what they are called, but they are cheap and have all the colours in them.

Sounds like a really nice room..!!

What is under the carpet? Even plywood can be painted solid color,in squares, marbled, or any thing that suits your fancy. A rather large area rug can be really cheap. In my mind, the carpet goes.
