Try banners of material hanging down to break up the wall space. You need to acknowledge the height and not try to pretend it isn't there. A "stack" of coordinated abstract paintings might work too. Go on line and look for the Fifian "tapa", a long decorative "scroll" of natural fibers painted with unique designs. This is a Polynesian tradition that would work very well in your space.

Well you didn't say anything about a budget so if the sky is the limit....Turn it into a waterfall!!They can custom build ones in existing spaces like yours. They are beautiful, make a bold statement & sound fantastic!!
OR if there is a budget (isn't there always one of those pesky things? LOL)....
I would look for large art piece. Perhaps a non-traditional one, like a funky collage or sculpture would be cool or I've seen large pieces of scrolled ironwork weaved together making a large piece that had places to put candles, that would be neat too.
OR....you could hire (unless you're crafty like that) an artist & have them custom design a mural of some sort to paint in that space....
I think anything will work well as long as it's the same scale as the space you're working with & the bolder the statement the better in my opinion!

As another respondent said earlier, a faux finish is great way to decorate a large wall area. It is also easy to keep clean and will obsure minor wall scrapes (Like from Kids banging into the walls, for instance). They're relatively easy to apply and can be done in a myriad of colors to match your decor.

Try a Venetian plaster,It looks Great and it gives lots of definition to high walls.
