I normally use Blistease or Blistex - put it on when it starts coming up & then the coldsore never crusts over & some of the pain eases.

However, last time I'd run out so I used some Lemon Balm tea. It worked about the same as the Blistex - no unsightly crusting or weeping - had the big bump though, you know the one, where your lip feels about 20 times bigger than normal.

If you don't want to follow the link to find out about the lemon balm - here's the gist of what the website (linked below) says:

For cold sores, steep 2 to 4 tsp of crushed leaf in 1 cup boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. Cool. Apply with cotton balls to the sores throughout the day.

Lemon balm's antivital properties may be attributed to chemical compounds it contains such as caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid.

I'm lucky, I have lemon balm growing in the garden - but I belive that you can buy the tea in a variety of outlets - at least, I've seen adverts on the internet for it.

cold soresw are viral in origin, and zovirax is an anti-viral agent. the cold sore viruses "from the herpes family" tend to come and go all the time. till now, zovirax is the best, though sometimes you need to keep putting it for a long time but at the end it does work.medical research didn't find till now anything as effective and safe as zovirax.

Colgate toothpaste is actually the best. At least it's the only thing that works for me.

As soon as you notice a cold sore appearing, put some toothpaste with fluoride on it and let it dry. It doesn't look very good when you go out in public but use it when your'e at home and apply it before you go to sleep. I have bought some very expensive blister creams that never worked.

I believe Zovirax is the best. Don`t kiss anyone with a cold sore is the best preventative. Keep away! Well away!

Zovirax is good. Many people use L-lysine to prevent cold sores and to shorten their duration. You can get this at most drug stores with the vitamins. It's an essential amino acid found in vegetables.

My former roommate got cold sores frequently and requested a prescription for valtrex (yes, the genital herpes medication) from her doctor. It worked fantastically for her as cold sores are a mild and common form of the herpes virus.

If you feel you are getting them all too frequently, you may try asking your doctor for the same. You need only take one pill each time you feel a cold sore coming on, so in the long term it's not expensive compared to other treatments.

Zovirax is the generic equilvelant to valtrex and it works great. If you follow the instructions with your prescription, it should clear up in about 5 days.
