HB, is the hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the compounds present in red blood cells in the body that enable them to transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Hemoglobin is made of for 4 globin (peptide) chains and an iron molecule (the heme part of hemoglobin).

The normal HB levels for men is between 12-14 and for women is between 10-12 as your doctor has told you. 5.0 shows that you have a very low HB levels, and you are therefore anemic. This presents as lethargy, tiredness, paleness and shortness of breath. This may even lead to cardiac failure. The causes are anemia are far and varied. This includes thalessiemia, sickle cell anemia and blood loss anemia. If you have no genetic problems, it could also be due to heavy menstual blood loss or diet factors like low iron, folat and vitamin b12. Those are compounds that are required to produce red blood cells and hemoglobin

You can take folate, iron and Vitamin b12 if your not taking enough of those supplements. And take care of your self.

HB stands for hemoglobin, hemoglobin basically carries the oxygen in your blood to your tissues. Your normal HB should be about 15 for males and about 13 or 14 for females. Low Hb could mean several things, most likely that you are anemic. One way to correct this problem is to eat more foods with iron (beans, meat that's not from a fast food restaurant) and in the same meal as the iron, eat something with Vitamin C (strawberries, cabbage, oranges). Eating vitamin C in the same meal as iron will triple your iron absorption. If you have any questions, email me personally. I'm a current nursing student.

sounds like you are anemic. Anemia is not a disease, its a symptom. The cause of the anemia needs to be discovered. Common causes are: acute blood loss, iron deficiency, hemolytic episode.

It means that the protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen to tissues is low. This could be severe anemia
