This is my third winter, and I'm already showing symptoms. Thankfully I should be able to get a diagnosis from my doctor this year, because you have to be showing signs for three years before it's recognised as this condition.
The only thing I've heard of working is a SAD lamp....but in reality, I think it's a short term illusion which might work whilst you're using it, but then you're back to square one when you turn it off.
Interesting topic, I'll read with interest.

I think that your depression may have more to do with your life than with the weather. You are going through two extremely stressful and depressing life events now - a breakup and job change. I think you should try to see a therapist and/or psychiatrist to get talk therapy and possibly medication. If you think that you suffer mostly from the lack of sunlight, there are lamps that imitate the sun effectively. Perhaps you could get away to a sunny destination while you are between jobs. Try to go to well-lit, pleasant places like your favorite stores, coffee houses, etc. I hope things improve for you!

Hi Carly Anna, I suffer from depression it is not seasonal it is permanent. I am taking medicines Cymbalta and Zyprexa which have worked for me. I also receive therapy from my psychiatrist.
Exercise, Yoga and acupuncture are useful. I understand that your type of depression is caused by the lack of sunlight which moves the neurotrasmiters in the brain. You are not alone. There is people going through the same thing. I am here anytime you want to talk

Seasonal affected disorder SAD, This is not a nice thing, I suffered with this for 22 years, 3 suicide attempts bare witness. How to survive well aside from the " I just do" here's how I did it, firstly take the SRIH (serotonin re-uptake inhibitor) of your choice . For me cipralex worked. Once you are over the emergency look to light therapy. cipralex stopped me trying to slit my wrists light therapy stopped me needing cipralex . for 4 years now I have not needed SRIH. Winter is still crap but at lest now I can deal with it. You are not alone, accept you have SAD and work towards your own solution. For info I am a point of contact for the media on SAD. It is only debilitating if you allow it to be You are special belive it, your Friends and family know it to be true

Keeping busy when awake and having as much sleep as possible helps. Nice sunny days get out in it for a LONG walk, rap up warm. Reduces symptoms. Recognising it and accepting it makes a good start.
Medication may be of use but it takes a month to work and needs to be stopped slowly so you end up on them at a time you don't need them. Side effects ......!
