My family had a great dane when I was younger. His name was Sampson. He lived to be 12 which is very unusal, they usually only about 7 years. They need lots of room and eat a lot of food. There are a few health issues that are great danes can inherit (but so can other dogs) like CARDIOMYOPATHY and HIP DYSPLASIA. Bloat is the number 1 killer of Great Danes. Vets recommend multiple small meals throughout the day and no vigorous activity around meal times.
I've included a very helpful website: Great Dane Club of America
I loved our Great Dane. He was playful, loving, faithful, protective... all the things you look for in a pet. Good Luck and Take Care.

Just know that they get HUGE! and they eat. A lot. If you go with this big breed of dog, also know that they come with potential hip/bone structure issues. Try to take precautions, such as if you have stairs (2nd floor home) limit the climbing that the dog does. Try not to let him jump off from great heights. Too much of this stresses the joints. This is a common occurrence. I have a great dane as well who is 7 years old, and last year I had to have a hip replacement done. Read up as much as you can before you commit. However, on a good note.... they are wonderful dogs. I have two along with a german sheppard/bloodhound and I have never seen a better group of dogs.

My Great Dane is great with my kids and so loving. Those first 6 months were hard cause she chewed everything in sight. But with time she's the best dog ever.

Good
They're wonderful loving dogs, very gentile and kind. Always good with kids, elderly, ect. and dependable.
Bad
The life expentency is very short, latest I've heard is about seven to nine years, and through their life and especially later they'll have all kinds of health problems that cause the dog to suffer and eat up your wallet (even if you have pet insurance). It's heart breaking especially for such a wonderful animal.

Good -- they are very fun dogs to have. They are loving, caring, non aggressive. Kids can ride them around the yard, no problems. Hell you could probably ride it around the yard just for sh!ts and giggles too!
Bad -- They are expensive, they only live about 6 or 7 years (generally, but there are cases of older ones for that *** hole that I know is going say, "nuh uh mine lived for 10 years"). They are expensive to own because they eat a TON of food. They also prone to hip and joint problems because of their size and if there are problems it can cost A LOT of money to treat.
There ya go, I personally love the dogs and if I had a bigger place and a boat load of cash laying around I wouldn't hesitate to have one. They are soo fun!

They are great dogs. The biggest problem I think is the fact that they don't usually live much beyond 8.

They have a very short life span. 10 years max. (normally) Also they have a high rate of twisted gut. And most die, before surgery can be done. It's expensive.
