Most prisons and jails have their own website, with an inmate search option. Like in Illinois you would just type IDOC ( for Illinois Department of Corrections ), and on their website you can go to inmate search, and look them up by their name, birth date, or inmate #, and most other states should have similar processes.

If you're in the USA, most state department of corrections are online, and they'll have "inmate search" somewhere right on the front of the website.
So enter your state name, then "department of corrections" in yahoo search, and go from there!
