The speaker here is merely delineating the importance of literature to humanity. Literature incites thought, rebellion, and imagination in some cases. Why do you think so many books were banned in WWII by Hitler? He wanted to oppress rebellious thoughts and wanted to discourage free will and free speech. Free speech makes us think for ourselves, and thinking for ourselves is how one arrives at "a whole new life. Books encompass and imitates life itself.

This quote means that the guy who got this book was bored to tears and was probably thinking of snuffing it. Then this guy gave him this book which sort of distracted him, I think.
