I'm not a fan of it. my husband and i plan on if my daughter gets attached to hers making it a day of celebration to get rid of it. We plan on getting balloons and making a big fuss over it tieing each binky to a balloon and sending them to heaven to the babies there. We will tell her the babies in heaven need them and then we will set them free.

I too feel that going on three is a bit old, however, it is important to make the child feel comfortable with the transition. One of my kids (I have 5) had a hard time giving up his binky. A friend told me about something that worked for her so I gave it a try. It was to cut a small portion of the end of the binky off. Then every few days cut a little more off. After two times of cutting, my son was done with it. He said "binky broke". He was a year and a half and wanted to throw it away. He never even asked for another one. Hope this helps.

my daughter broke herself of the binky at age 10 months. If she hadnt, I would have taken it away from her when I weaned her from nursing at 12 months. According to doctors, a binky is not harmful to teeth or health in the first 2 years. It even reduces the risk of SIDS. And personally, I would have rather my daughter been attached to a binky than her thumb, because a binky can be taken away. A thumb, they have forever, and some kids suck them into much older years. A child sucking a pacifier is no more "disgusting" than a child sucking a thumb.

There is no difference between a thumb and a binky so don't feel superior to your sister. It may look RIDICULOUS, to you, but your son is meeting the same needs by sucking his finger and if your sister has to she can take away the binky, you can't cut of your child's thumb.

My son never used a binky....I didn't try for 3 weeks to establish nursing and after that he had no interest.

I agree it looks stupid to see a 3, or 4 year old walking around with a binky......but my child has the same issues with his little security blanket....we have rules...Booey is for the house and for bedtime, he is not allowed to go to school or outside.

What's wrong with a toddler having a binky? Why do you say that it's ridiculous?

All of my kids (all six) had some sort of crutch. Some used binkies, some blankies, some a favorite stuffed animal. They're all pretty normal now.

And why are so many people so quick to judge.....e.g. those that say they think it's horrible to see a 2-year old with a binky....sheesh, it's just a pacifier, and the kids like it.

The problem with binky's and thumbs, of any age, is that it alters the incoming teeth. Other problems arise in emotionally and mental situations.

Sucking thumb is not a better alternative. It is equal amount of damage can do to the developing teeth and gums.

Your sister don't want her to cry. Therefore, this child will have oral problems (Direct her to a dentist) and emotional issues on dealing with always getting her way with it.

it is not "better" than hearing her cry. Hearing her cry can be annoying or heart breaking. Does that give right to it? No. Just means she has to find other solutions to parent her now that she is a toddler.

Bacteria and germs are also entering the mouth. Children allow enough bacteria and germs already orally and physically. I don't think it is a good idea to condon him to do it in your presence.

Washing hands and binky is not good enough to protect against virus, bacteria and germs. We are actually conducted this as a lab experiement in my Biology class last month. That is how I know.

My mom never gave me a binky and I never sucked my thumb. She gave me sippy cups at 9 months old and weaned me of the bottle at 11 months. There is solutions to do it. Just have to be repetitious and not "give in" as your sister is doing.

your child is 8 months and can start to decrease the thumb sucking where you won't have your sister trying to tell you how she feels about your son.

Why do you care? Why would you want to take a pacifier away from a three month old baby and listen to him cry? Does that make you a good mother? If you were breastfeeding him (which I doubt) and let him nurse when he wanted his pacifier then there was no harm in it but an infant that young has a very real need to suck and to deprive him of that is unnecessary, harmful and cruel.
Your sister sounds like a good mother and her priorities are in the right place. Leave her alone and if it bothers you so much ( guilt probably) look the other way. Most of all do not try to make her feel bad for doing the kind, loving thing.

I hate to see toddlers it a binky! I took my daughter's away when she was 1yr. The best way to get rid of it is to (without the child seeing you do it) cut off the nipple. Not all the way to the base, but enough that they can feel there is something different. It won't take long for them to pitch the binky themselves.

My daughter put hers in her mouth and pulled it right back out and said "its broken". She dropped it on the floor and never looked back!

Do you want your sis telling you how to raise your kids? Get off her back. Its her kid. Now as for binky's they are better than thumb sucking as you can not get "rid" of the thumb. I think your niece probably doesnt need the "binky" as much as her mom needs her to have it.

yes, it may look ridiculous but does it really matter? There most likely not going to have it in their mouth when they go to school so who cares? My kids didn't use them past 4 months, but it was because they didn't want to, not because i didn't let them have it.
And yes, I've seen kids who look like there 5 who not only have a binky in their mouth, but there also in a friggin stroller!
