Unfortunately it's felt that women are more nuturing than men. Women carry the child for 9 months and there should be an emotional attachment from before birth. Men never know their child until it's born, whereas women feel it inside from 16 weeks. On the other hand I think it's very wrong that a woman can decide to have a child without a mans consent and still expect him to pay for it. The laws are in place to protect the child, and with it the woman who carries that child. I don't honestly see how the laws could ever be changed to help everyone. Whilst men should have more rights it's impossible to have everyones best interests at heart all the time. The best way around things is to have a good relationship with the mother, although this is not always possible. I guess basically someone has to have more rights, and as the child bearing, child feeding gender, women are born with that right.

If a child was born in the UK after April 2003, then if the father is on the birth certificate, he has Parental Responsibility, which means he has equal responsibility to the mother, and should be considered in all of the important decisions, equally with the mother. If a child was born before that, then the mother would have to apply for the father to have Parental Responsibility, otherwise, she simply would be the main parent, and would be the one to make the decisions, and would even have the say over whether to switch off a life support machine...when the father would have no say.
My partner has Parental Responsibility for our youngest son, because he was born after the law changed, but not our eldest. I haven't got round to applying for it, and honestly believe that if anything happened to me, Parental Responsibility would be granted to my partner anyway, because he would have PR for our youngest child.
To be honest, I think it only really comes into play in the parents separate...that's when Parental Responsibility really matters, because courts take it into consideration etc.

This is part of the reason that children shouldn't be born out of wedlock! It may seem old fashioned, but children NEED both parents! Although the mother is usually the nurturing one, the father plays a vital role in a childs development.
But, since it is so common, the courts believe that a child needs their mother more. There is a bond that is formed between a mother and her children during pregnancy. The motherly instinct is a strong power! Of course, their are exceptions to every rule, but usually this is true.
Sorry guys! Protect yourselves during sex, and you won't have this issue to deal with!

It is a wise man who knows his own father. But seriously since there is no legal arrangement in the relationship as far as the father is concerned then the legal guardian or parent is the mother. And of course the is a presumption that a child is better of with the mother in most cases

Because the mother gave birth to the child, in theory the parental bond is stronger between the mother and the child, traditionally the mother spends more time with the child, i.e. breast feeding etc so the bond stays stronger.

Perhaps it's because the man (in too many instances, but not all) can just walk out, leaving the mother with the child...maybe even because the mother has a deeper bond with the child in the early days.

Because mothers more often than not look after the children more. She certainly does in this house. Get them up for school, take to school, feed at teatime, get them ready for bed, play for a bit, take to bed, and repeated every day of the year. Does that answer your question.
