It was added in the 50's during the "commie" scare. The US didn't want to appear similar in any way to the "atheistic" communists so they infused a lot of things that should've remained secular with reference to the spiritual. This is absolutely unconstitutional, by the way.

First off, "our forefathers" didn't write it. The Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy in 1892.
Interestingly, Francis Bellamy was a Baptist minister, and did NOT include the words "under God" in the original Pledge. Kinda makes you think, don't it?
In 1953, the Knights of Columbus directed a campaign to get the words "under God" added to the Pledge. This was during the Cold War, in an attempt to differentiate America from "dem Godless Commies". Congress added the words to the Pledge in 1954 as a result of the KoC campaign.
The original pledge:
'I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.'
Other modifications:
"and the Republic" changed to "and TO the Republic" - 1892
"to my Flag" changed to "to THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" - 1923/24

The Pledge was written in 1892 in some children's magazine to promote respect for the flag. It was adopted for national use in the 1920's . The words "under God" were added in the 50's as a counter to Godless communism and the Cold War.
The founding fathers had nothing to do with it.

It was added in the 50's as an insult to the Soviet Union. It never should have been added - this is a secular nation that encourages religious freedom, not a religious nation that oppresses religious freedom - like many other countries. It's high time it came back out - I personally haven't said the pledge in over 12 years. It just doesn't mean what I want it to mean that that 'god' in there.

The pledge was not written by our forefathers it was written in 1892.
The rewrite came during the "commie" scare, it seems the pinheads thought that the word God would not be something communists spies and moles could say.
Heck the founding fathers didn't even put the word God on money.

No you are not lame for asking about historical mistakes, the Demarcates make them all of the time, mostly on purpose.
The word 'God' was added in 1952 (I think). But I know that it was added. In fact the phrase ' under God' was what was added.
If you read that pledge very carefully, you will notice that it does not say that we are a Democracy, but that we are a Republic.

The Pledge was written as part of an advertising campaign to sell more flags. Today it is used as a jingoistic tool to brainwash young children into false patriotism.
The Pledge is the OPPOSITE of our forefathers intentions. They believed in the marketplace of ideas, and the right, the DUTY, to question authority and the status quo. In the words of Thomas Jefferson, dissent is the highest form of patriotism.

Not lame! Great question!
For fun, watch the old Christmas movie "The Bells of Saint Mary" when you can see Bing Crosby as a Priest leading school children in the Pledge before they crammed <> into it.

It was added later. During the 50's. Look up McArthy(ism). Gov McArthy did things like this in order to fight Communism in America.
I think it should go back to the original. Because we are Not One Nation Under "God"... we are too diverse in our personal beliefs to claim such a thing.
