I use the New Oxford translation- it is a fairly modern translation that uses modern language without dumbing the Bible down. A favorite for the scholarly types. It includes a LOT of footnotes, essays, and comments that help clarify. The problem with the KJV is that it is the product of an outdated language- the English language has changed drastically since its publishing. Notice how you can't read Shakespeare too well without footnotes that clarify? That is because it is the product of an outdated language, and clarity is sacrificed for the original feel of the literature. Since the KJV is a translation, it is not confined to this "original feel".

King James Bible

The New American Standard has been said by many to be the most literal of translations... while still being pretty easy to read.

NIV tends to dumb down wordings a lot for average readers and sometimes this leads to bad translation.

King James has a lot of die hard fans, but when it was translated it was with limited knowledge of all of the variations or meaning of the different languages...

Anyway, NAS

I like the NIV because it sticks closely to the Hebrew text but does it using contemporary language. I used to stay with the KJV but would get bogged down in trying to understand the passages.

Well, so far I use a King James Version in my daily Bible study, but I am getting an Amplified Bible by Joyce Meyer with her study notes for Christmas and I am really excited. In her books, she uses the Amplified and it really brings the scripture to life and explains things a lot more clearly.

I use the New Living Standard for family devotions, a NAS for traveling, and an interlinear with the Literal translation for study.
