Well, if money is not a problem go with Bose or JBLs.
And if you listen to music loud, make sure you get the biggest wattage you can afford. I use speakers so big in my music room that they are on wheels. Too heavy just to pick up (at least for one person).
If money is a problem, Peavey makes a great PA speaker (15 inch woofer and horn) for 200.00 a piece at Musiciansfriend.com.

I use Bose 501's, 301's, and center for my system. The speaker surrounds on the 501's had to be replaced due to age, but once that was done - BAM - good as new. I love Bose clarity.

JBL. They support their products like no other company. Get a nice set you like, and twenty years down the road when you want to recone them you'll be able to, no problem. Most other companies you'll have a hard time finding the recone kits. The sound? For home-theatre they're great as they reproduce highs very well...better than most others. Very clean sound.
