Does your friend have a favorite type of airplane? If so, maybe get a nice photograph of the airplane and have it framed?
If you go to Office Max, Office Depot or Staples, you will see lots of office supplies- including items for the desk. You can check there for more "practical" things.
I think Steven Covey has a line of "inspirational" photographs with appropriate sayings. You may want to look into that.

You can either go with something personal
* a picture that means something to him and is still appropriate for the work space
* some kind of decoration he will appreciate and find funny (does he collect anything?)
or with something more neutral - to avoid falling into the "this is not appropriate in the workplace" trap:
* a framed picture of some machines he works with (might be hard to get)
* a potted plant
* a nice cup
* a bowl with sweets
* a desk clock
* a nice set of pens, perhaps even a fountain pen
* a calendar

A down vest and ear muffs. It gets cold and windy on those airfields and the hangars are hard to heat from little to no insulation. A personal small Mr. Coffee Maker. A small battery/electric radio, thermal lunch bag or special container to heat left overs, container for snaks, good magnifying glass, Magic 8 Ball for fun, membership to AAA for late night emergencies.

A great idea for a personal and unique gift is a handmade painting made from a photo that you send.
Check out this site: www.paintyourlife.com
The prices are reasonable and the outcome is amazing.
