Doc can only be read by Microsoft Word and any word processor program that is compatible, such as Open Office. It allows for pictures, tables, graphic illustrations and different fonts.
Rich Text Format and Text are designed to be read by any text program. RTF only has a few format options and TXT the least; but they can be transferred between computers and across the internet most easily.
TXT files are made in Notepad and RTF on Wordpad on a pc running Windows.
Word and Open Office can make all three formats.
So Notepad can open a TXT file made in Word but not a Doc as the formatting will be lost and the document will appear in plain TXT format.
Word can open a DOC and retain all the formatting; it can also open a TXT file. It can add formatting to that text file and save it as a doc.

Each is a different file format -- a different way of storing not only the letters (characters) but the formatting (fonts, paragraphs, etc)
DOC = microsoft word doctument
TXT = text only document, no formatting
RTF = Rich Text Formatting. Like TXT but with some formatting and readable by more programs than just Microsoft.

doc allows graphics and MANY MANY fonts.
txt is straight text font with no ability to make the letters look pretty.
.rtf (rich text format) allows some additional fonts with no special functions...
stick with .doc.
