What kind of camera do you recommend and what kind of lenses?

I want to take pictures of dogs, flowers, and people...I really like when their is a main subject and then the background is out of focus.

I also want something that I can take pictures of things in motion without it getting blurry...any ideas

I also would like to stay under $800

For $650 you can get a Nikon D50 with a Nikon 18-55mm zoom. Add $100 for a 2GB Sandisk Extreme lll memory card and you've got a good camera, well within budget.
If you don't mind going a little over budget, replace the 18-55mm lens with the much better Nikon 18-70mm zoom. (And perhaps economise a bit by getting only a 1GB Sandisk Ultra ll card.)
The Canon 350D and Nikon D70 are also tempting, but your money is better spent on upgrading the lens - that's what determines your image quality.

Congratulation on your decision to upgrade to a nicer camera. I'm a digital camera fanatic myself, and have spent many long hours researching the very same question you're considering.

There are some great entry-level dSLRs to choose from right now, most of which you can get at your price range. I highly recommend you consider Canon, Nikon, or Sony (formerly Konica-Minolta). I went with the Konica-Minolta 5d myself (which is no longer in production) due to the built-in image stabilizer, and so far I love it. Sony took KM and slapped their label on it, so I assume it's just as good or better.

For all the info you need, go to the digital camera site I've included with this message. Check out the Forums and review the messages, and try not to get too overwhelmed with all the info.

go for the Nikon D80, this is a superb little camera capable of true professional results. it has 10 megapixels ,shhots the highest quality raw files and uses the sd cards that he may have from his compact although in the highest quality setting he will only get around 50 photos on a 1gb card. it comes with a superb quality 18-70mm lens.It has 11 selectable focus points does 3 frames per second. for 100 jpegs. it has full auto modes and a full array of manual odes as well so as he grows in confidence he can take ore control whilst still getting the best quality photos. it is also fully compatable with the nikon speedlight creative lighting system cost around £650 for camera and lens allow £30-£35 for a high speed memory card such as sandisk ultra 2 2gb it also feature the 1005 sector matix metering, It is also compatble with almost every nikon auto focus lens ever made

You don't need to get a top of the range one just make sure it has manual controls so that you can set the shutter speed and aperture you want.

You also want one with a good lens with a wide maximum aperture. That will allow you to take pictures with the background out of focus

Setting a fast shutter speed will allow you to take fast motion pictures without them being blurred.

I purchased a Fuji fine pix 5.2 meg it is a wonderful camera for the money. You can get the same camera in 9 meg. I payed 310$ for my camera and I think the 9 meg was around 600 $. I've seen pictures from other brands and used some professional cameras and for the money you can't do any better.

I agree with OMG, 100%. Vote his answer as the best.

The D50 has a few "consumer friendly" automatic modes that make it very easy to use, but still offers total photographic control when you are ready to take charge. The lens he is recommending is the Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens and not the "kit" lens. My wife has this exact combination and it is excellent. I liked that lens so much that I bought one for myself as a back-up lens.

Go with a Canon. Go with as high of MEGApixel as you can buy for that price. Canon holds the most patents in imaging technology over any company in the world. For good reason.

You could even buy a used one. You want one with a high OPTICAL zoom. Disregard digital zoom - you can do that with your computer.

Good luck!
