Modest everyday tickle my nose.
Segura Viudas - Brut Reserva Cava N/V
This consistently good cava has a nutty, lemon, pear mineral, toasty biscuit nose with a floral note in the background. It's fresh, clean, round and dry with baked pear, citrus, apple, nutty honey almond flavours. Good drier brut style with lots of flavour. A solid sparkler for the money and one to drink any old time.
Weekend bubbles.
Chandon - California Brut Classic N/V
Lots of fine mousse. Fresh floral, pear, green apple, creamy citrus fruit aromas jump out of the glass. Elegant but rich and light with baked with good acidity. Classy, clean and well balanced.
Wallet friendly French Champagne good enough for special occasions
Lanson - Black Label Brut N/V
Persistent mousse. Good continuous mousse. Very mineral, green apple skin, pear, toasty, floral aromas. Round, soft, fresh style with good mousse but a bit warm. Nutty, toasty, green apple, mineral, citrus flavours with a fairly crisp, dry finish. Very solid, consistent style

I'm with the gal who said Vinho Verde! Espiral is a great one and it's available at Trader Joe's for about $5 a bottle :) It's from Northern Portugal and it's been compared to Yves Breussin Vouvray for about 1/5 the price. I'm stunned they bottle this without a champagne cork!
Another consideration would be Barefoot Sparkling Wine that's (I think) 100% Chardonnay. It's a little more... maybe about $7 a bottle?

How about combining the best of both worlds and opt for a Vinho Verde? This wine is light in body, crisp, acidic and has a hint of effervescence. This is neither a champagne, nor sparkling wine, but wonderfully refreshing and might be a nice alternative.

Well, you can't go wrong with Cook's. It really depends on what you are serving with this. If you have a Trader Joe's market close, you can always ask them, they are very resonable. Also, your supermarkets, at least the better ones, will have a wine expert on hand to help you select a nice bottle.

If you want light, find a decent Proseco or Cava, and try and stay away from the horrible stuff they sell in the grocery stores (like the aforementioned Cook's).

Veuve Clicquot. It sold in many liquor stores. It has an orange label and it costs about $40 a bottle and is worth every penny.
