Since age 12, I was diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome, & now, I'm 23 & the current psychiatrist doesn't believe I have it. My family & social workers think I'm using my TS as an excuse to get out of trouble. I really can't help cursing, & my tics & outbursts are anxiety-induced. Anxiety brings on the onset of my tics & outbursts. In the place I'm living now, the social workers punish me & make me suffer consequences for every time I curse, & I can't help it. I still have strong symptoms.

TS usually doesn't disappear entirely, but I've heard plenty of times that it can decrease in severity. I was absolutely awful until about 22 or 23, with the peak tic time being at around 19. Now at 30 I no longer need to take medication. I still have tics, but they're minor compared to what they were 10 years ago. Blessed be!

The books I've read say they do usually slow down in frequency. I know in my own case, the need to express verbal tics has gone down considerably. But everyone's different -- that's about the only constant there is with this condition. And, tics tend to come & go in waves, and can be exasperated by stress, which there's plenty of in the "real world". Punishment is not a good way to deal with tics, and I'd consider changing social workers in that case.

no i dont believe it is something you grow out of. my brother was born with it and he's now 31 and it hasnt eased up any. as for people saying the tics are anxiety induced i just dont understand. i have an anxiety disorder and it does nothing of the sort. that is horrible that they think youre using it as an excuse because it is VERY real. i have lived around it for 21 years and it is not something to be taken lightly. best of luck and god bless!
