Not easy to do. You have to get the nail to grow out so that it can be trimmed straight across, even if badly curved. The outside edges of the nail grow faster than the thicker inside and form sharp points which dig in and cause the pain and bleeding. You have to continually trim these points so that the nail can grow forward. Trim the end of the nail straight across so it doesn't protrude beyond the end of the toe and eventually (sometimes a year or more) the outside edges will push to the end and the whole nail can be trimmed flush with the end of the toe.
I was surprised that a foot doctor I know wasn't aware you could do this. They always want to remove the nail, but he has had success with patients patient enough to carry it out. I did it and am no longer bothered with the problem.

There is a way to cure an ingrown toenail. I discovered how and created a manual that can be purchased on-line from the following website: http://www.thetoenailtrainer.com This is not a scam, it is not a joke, it really works. I had an ingrown toenail for 8 years. I tried everything including surgery several times, and numerous products at the pharmacies and on-line. None of it worked long term. The toenail just kept growing into my toe. A year ago I discovered a process that re-trains the toenail to grow properly and immediately removes the pain. I created a manual that shows how to cure and treat the ingrown toenail. You can purchase it at the eBay store: http://stores.ebay.com/toenail-trainer. I hope this helps.

What is the best treatment for a painful ingrown toenail?

When the problem is mild, you may only need to soak your foot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes and place dry cotton, such as part of a cotton ball, under the corner of the nail. Signs that the problem is getting worse include increasing pain, swelling and drainage of the area. Sometimes minor surgery is needed to remove the part of the nail that is poking into the skin.

What kind of surgery is performed to fix the toenail?

Your doctor will first numb your toe by injecting it with an anesthetic. Then he or she will cut your toenail along the edge that is growing into the skin and pull out the piece of nail. Finally, your doctor may apply a small electrical charge or a liquid solution to the exposed part of the nail bed. This keeps the toenail from growing into the skin again. This part of the surgery is called ablation, and your doctor will decide whether it needs to be done. Not all patients need ablation.

I have had quite a few of these.

Each time, the best and ultimate cure was to see a doctor.

However if the infection is hurting or is too much infection for the doctor locally anesthetize (freeze) the area- try this:

-Soak the toe in warm seasalt water for 15 minutes per day.
-Put plantain leaves on the infected area under the bandaid you put over it. Wash the plantain leaves first! OR use an antibiotic cream such as bactroban or polysporin.
-Make sure to clean the area every morning and night, and change the bandage often.

However, nothing beats actually going to the doctor.

You don't. I have them all the time. They claim it's the way I cut my toenails but whatever, I still get them. If you can't dig it all out there is nothing to be done but go to the doctor. Mine was so infected before I went. He put an injection in my toe, didn't hurt very much, deadened it and then cut out a portion of my toenail. I didn't feel a thing but INSTANT RELIEF!!!!!

unfortunately the only cure is to have the toenail cut out by the doctor. usually though the dr fixes the nail so that you should never have any more problems with it.

if it gets bad you should go in immedietly to the doctor, my mom just had a really bad ingrown, and when they took her nail off they found a huge tumor under there. so you should have it looked at if it becomes really uncomfortable. also, check out webmd.com for some at home remedies that may be able to help.

I have been told that if you file the middle of the toenail down, the nail will grow towards the middle thereby pulling the nails up from the sides digging into the skin. I haven't had to try it but my cousin swears by it.

I was always told to bare the pain and cut out the parts digging in to your toe and then clean it with peroxide. However, for me it was reoccuring so I went to the doctor. I had mine permanently cut out like 5 years ago and have never had a problem with it happening again.

somethings easy to try...cut a V in the tip of the nail...causes the nail to grow towards the middle and not near the skin
