It depends on his rank and occupation. Some Colonels and above carry "their" own personal hand gun they are not suppose to but at that rank no one will say anything. Pilots are usually allowed to carry whatever or as much of what they want. Hell, a poor grunt gets in trouble using an AK-47.
As to the knife the same thing goes, I mean they can carry a pocket knife but not a saw tooth and such is not allowed. Some of the airborne units allow a saw tooth so in case of a crash the indiviual can cut their way out through the skin. The same thing for a Special Forces unit, they need them but not for what you think, even in the Civil War they were used for cooking, eating and so on and the Delta boys are the only ones out there on their own who needs all kind of tools (OK, and Marine Snipers).
Note: The pentagon is finally giving honest consideration to getting rid of that piece of junk, the M-16. Some of the reporters have been reporting our guys hitting the insurgents four and five times before they stay down Many of our boys like the AK-47 one hit they stay down. They wanted either to have their own weapons or a AK47 but were told no. “Wink” many Commanders want their men to stay alive so don’t be surprised at what you see on TV. There have been rumors as to bringing back the M14.
I thought you might like this.
A 'touchy-feely' CNN reporter, while interviewing a Marine sniper asked, "What do you feel when you shoot a terrorist."
The Marine answered “Recoil".
God Bless You and The Southern People.

Other than the elite special operations, only authorized weaponry is used in the military.
I believe that no soldier would want to use a flint lock weapon in combat. I have known of some SF and Airborne troopers using their own Bowie knives in Vietnam--one in particular was a descendant of Sitting Bull that used an age-old scalping knife during his Vietnam tours. I saw it while living in Tucson--it was well over a foot long. How he got it back to the States is not known, however.

1. On base probably not, but not very far off base there is likely to be a gun shop 2.) You may buy and own a firearm like any other civilian. You may not carry a gun you purchase while on duty, many states allow open carry without a license and a few allow conceal carry without a license. If you abide by those laws you may carry while off of base without a permit. Bases have their own laws banning the carry of firearms 3. If you have your own house (will only happen if you have a family) you can keep it there, if your living in barracks then you will have to turn it into the arms room, you may take it out at any time though 4. I know the local base has ranges designated for personal use

I can speak from personal experience that SF (special forces) can use whatever we want. The problem is that you can get it in to country but you won't be able to bring it back home. If we wanted to we could use flint lock pistol but I really don't think I would trust my life with that over my .45. As far as the convention side goes, I think the higher ups wouldn't allow "Joe" to use non-issued weapons for reasons of personal safety.

NO. Errrrr although....
If one were to shoot an Iraqi that had a licensed copy of a Beretta made in Iraq, theoretically, he could pick it up. But that totally depends on your officers. If they won't have it neither will you the pistol. I have heard stories of soldiers picking up "personal" pistols in Iraq.
But you MIGHT be able to get one in the country, but not out of the country.

No you can't. You can't even take a personal weapon on a military base without permission. My husband is a retired army officer, my son is an officer and my son in law is an enlisted man so I'm 100% sure about this.

No, your only allowed to use weapons issued by the Army. Personal firearms are illegal in wartime operations. Do not believe anything you hear, no matter what you do in the Military, special forces whatever, the only weapons you can use are the ones issued to you. Patton served in WAYYYYYY different time my friend

Yeah right...do you realize how big of a stink there would have been if someone had tried to tell Georgie Patton that he couldn't carry his 44 magnum ivory handled revolver? High ranking officers can carry any damn weapon they want though for the most part these days they are not as flamboyant as Patton was.
