It is not illegal to make backups of your own DVDs, as long as you keep them for yourself. I use DVDShrink, it works great and it's free!

you can back up your dvd's using dbd shrink. It is the best free program out there, and it gets arround all but one type of copy protection put out by Sony on some region one DVD titles. To do this use DVD decryptor.
Download it from the link below, stick your disk in, fire up the program and go.
It should detect you put the dvd in automatically and do a quick analysis, then hit backup and press ok. It leaves you with an image file any cd burning program - such as nero - can burn onto a blank dvd for you.

If you are the owner of the DVD and your wanting to make a copy its perfectly legal. Best software is DVD Shrink, some DVD's are copy protected, I recomend DVD Decrypter to disable those protections.
Both these programs are free but may be difficult to find because hollywood companies are trying to make it illegal to copy dvds so the original web site has been shut down.

try to use AVS Video Converter http://www.best-video-converter.com/avs-video-converter.html
I think it is the best.
Convert video DVD to portable media players, convert video among all popular video formats, split & join files, rip video DVD to DivX, burn DVD, VCD and SVCD with integrated burning engine, edit and enhance video and even much, much more.

i don't know if it is legal in your place to copy dvd's. if you own one original dvd, they allow you to make one copy.i recommend you use dvd copy pro and you have to buy it but it's really good for back up.together with dvd43 to bypass encryption.(copy protection, must have)
second is dvdfab platinum(not freeware) and it's accompanied encryptor slysoft anydvd(also not freeware)
