Aside from FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and Pell Grant http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/student_guide/2004_2005/english/types.htm , you may want to explore private foundation grants

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) and their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices."

Perkins is a loan. In addition to Pell you might qualify for the FSEOG. Ask your financial aid counselor and be persistent. Also, if you write a letter of hardship, your school might give you an award that comes directly from the school. Also check out the federal Work Study program.

The Perkins you have to pay back. Your state should have grants for students. Fastweb has information about financial options. You can also call the school you are interested in and talk to a financial aid worker and they can tell you what you would qualify for and other options for you situation.
