Yes. Even worse than Cambridge. You will need impeccable grades and to be able to demonstrate to admissions tutors that you are capable of studying at a very rigorous level, both on your application form and at interview, should you be offered one (about 10% of people who apply don't make it that far). You may also have to take a written test, especially for some of the more popular and therefore oversubscribed subject areas.

I got into Cambridge, but a close friend of mine at the time (probably more intelligent and slightly better grades than me) didn't get into Oxford.

Well, Because its a very famous institution, It has to be hard to get into! Imagine how many people would want to go there!

But to get there, You need to apply in advance. Dont wait till its too late..... And you need an extra brain storage, well you gotta be bright and can express urself.

The easiest way to get there thouh is through its partner colleges. You go to the college for like the first year, and transfer to the University!

As you're American, you'll probably find that if you're a fairly good student, and arrogant as all hell, not to mention if Daddy's rich, you'll probably get in - no problems. It's Brits who have problems getting into Oxford and Cambridge, especially if they went to a State school, or if their parents don't go golfing with the Dean.

Famously tough. You have to be good and they have to like you too.
