I have a cat who recently started growling and he puts his leg up in the air and grooms himself repeatedly on his ... privates. He has never done this before and I'm wondering if this is a sign of an illness like a kidney infection or if he possibly fought with my other cat and got injured there. It's really weird because he just keeps grooming himself there and making weird growling noises. Please if you have any advice I would appreciate it from vets/vet techs or people who have been in the same situation. Our local vet is booked up for 2 months! so I really don't know what to do.

Yes like I said, the vet is booked for 2 months so it really can't wait. If it's serious I will be willing to travel to take him in and take time off work. I don't want to have to do this if it is just an injury. I was afraid it might be a urinary tract infection but I'm not familiar with them.

has he been urinating?
When my cat his blockage where he couldn't urinate, he did that. He growled alot, and groomed himself alot, as if he was trying to make himself go to the bathroom.
If he can go to the bathroom, then he may have an infection and it's burning him when he urinates. You can get a sample of urine yourself to bring to the vet. Get, either from your vet or from a Petco type of store, these little plastic pellets, like plastic kitty litter. Fill a litter box with these pellets. When your cat urinates in the box, get a sample of the urine, place it in a clean container and bring to your vets as soon as you can. If you can't bring immediately, you can store it in the refrigerator until you can bring it (only for a day or two, fresh urine is the best).
If he has an infection, the doctor can prescribe antibiotics for him.
Keep an eye on him though. If you notice that he's squatting and not urinating, or trying to urinate in different places other than the box, or if he's squatting for a long time and not much is coming out, he could be blocked and that is an emergency, the doctor would need to see you immediately or you'd need to go to an emergency clinic.
Good luck, hope he's ok.

It sounds like urinary tract infection. Get him antibiotics fast because it can turn into kidney infection and then he could die. So I would definately take to the emergency clinic or call the vet to ask for a quick check so you can get the meds. Explain what he's doing to the vet and if they still refuse ask them to refer you to another vet/location that can help now.

It could be an infection or if there is a blockage and he cannot urinate..you need to get him to the vet ASAP as this can be life threatening. There bladder could burst or the toxins in the bladder from the bacteria could back up into his system and poison him. So, you should get take him in..and if you mention that he may be blocked your local vet may let you come in on an emergency basis as this is a serious problem that cannot wait.

Look on the web and see if there is not a vet a little bit further and also almost every vet has an emergency room so you can bring him in to see if it urgent or it can wait .it is certainly an infection of some sort .

It is quite possible that his urine has become too alkaline and burns his penis and that is why he is licking it. Use canned meat with him and get him off the dry food. Dry food is too dehydrating for cats and the urine becomes too concentrated and tends to burn the cat.
You should have a vet do a urinalysis to determine the pH of the urine. You can get test strips from a pharmancy to determine the pH of the urine. If the test strip is blue (you can just lay it over a urine deposit) the urine is too alkaline. The strip should be lavendar to slightly pink.

Why are you seeking veterinary advice here? Call your vet, describe the cat's behavior, and get him an appointment.

If u want 2 check if ur cats is sick, u should try 2 sniff his ears. if they smell bad, it may mean he's sick. to check 4 injuries, try to examen his body for bite or scrach marks. if he wont let u, try to scan his body from a small distance. Also, innessant growling could mean that something had happenned that he cant get over.
