Not all ginger cats are male. I have a ginger female cat called Tinker and she has just had a litter of 8 kittens 6 ginger and two tabby. 2 of the ginger kittens are also female.
They are more rare than a male ginger but they do exsist.
The sex-linked orange gene, O, determines if there will be orange fur. This gene is located on the X chromosome. In cats with orange fur, phaeomelanin (orange pigment) completely replaces eumelanin (black or brown pigment).
Males have only one X chromosome, so only have one allele of this gene. O results in orange fur, and o results in non-orange fur.
Since females have two X chromosomes, they have two alleles of this gene. OO results in orange fur, oo results in non-orange fur, and Oo results in a tortoiseshell cat, in which some parts of the fur are orange and others areas non-orange. A cat with Oo and white spotting genes is commonly called a calico. The reason for the patchwork effect in female cats heterozygous for the O gene (Oo) is "X chromosome inactivation" - one or the other X chromosome in every cell in the embryo is randomly inactivated, and the gene in the other X chromosome is expressed. Its all down to genetics to why mainly calico are female and gingers are mainly male. Red in cats is a sex-linked color, carried on the X gene. Therefore, a male cat whose X carries red will be a red tabby. A female cat who carries one red and one non-red X will be a patched tabby, a tortoiseshell, or a calico (if she also has the dominant gene for white markings). A female cat who is homozygous for red (has it on both X genes) will be a red tabby. This is why you see more male red tabbies than females. This is also why male calicos are so rare: you have to have two X genes to be a calico. Male calicos have genetic aberrations of various sorts, of which XXY is most common. While they are most commonly sterile, there *are* documented cases of fertile male calicos. However, the generalization that "all calicos/torties are female" is true 99.999 percent of the time

Well i am sure that my little baby katie would not be impressed by that statement, she is all female and hates the site of any male. She is a beautiful ginger cat.

They're not...but just to let you know, mine's a male too;) As far as I know, there is no genetic reason why male and ginger go together so often, unlike with calicos and tortis being female. This is because it is x-linked...I went through all that on a differnt answer, and it's off-topic here, so I'll just quit rambling on, now;)

The ginger color is a genetic linked trait that is on the male chromozone. Sometimes a female will appear to be ginger but if looked more closely at she will have other hair color among the ginger.

Statistically orange cats are 75% male and 25% female. Humans are 50% male and 50% female. So it is a genetic roll of the dice.

We had a litter of four female orange kittens once at the shelter. We have an orange tabby female in my neighborhood. I have an orange and white female in my home.

We had a ginger cat and we thought it was a boy as most gingers are boys and when we took her to the vet to have it spayed they neutered her instead, she was a girl.........and it turns out she was a 'marmalade' which is very rare! Which is bad luck as we had her done we couldn't breed her, not that we would have anyways.
