When is a good time to start to potty train a child who cannot talk yet? My son had tubes put in his ears when he was 1 1/2, and just turned 2. My fiance wants to start to potty train him now, but i think that because of his hearing problems that it will be much more difficult for him to let us know when he has to use the potty. His vocabulary consists of a handful of words, and will be starting to see a speech therapist soon. Has anyone else went through this, and if so, how did you work on potty training with your child?

I personally dont think he is ready and I am in no hurry. I know kids develop at their own pace, and he will show me when he has to go. I just am not sure how to approach it when it is time. If it is the same as training a child with regular hearing or not.
2 is a bit young- and i know that. I was thinking maybe within the year... Its more his dad who thinks we should do it now.

2 is a bit young, and hearing may be an issue. I suggest start to show him the potty now, and dont expect miracles right away. Just cause a child cannot talk correctly doesnt mean they dont understand anything. show him potty training videos, escort him to the potty, just let him "want" to use it on his own- forcing him will only delay progress.
good luck!

Two years old is pretty young to potty train a child, especially a boy, with or without hearing issues.
Does he wake up from his naps dry? Does he express an interest in going potty? I'd speak to the doctor about it, but it is a process that most kids don't get until 2.5 or 3.

Tell your fiance to potty train himself. For ANY child hearing or deaf wait until the child is ready. Also it would be great if you and your fiance learned sign language and taught your son as well. This way he will be able to communicate ANYTHING to you. I've left a couple of links

Im very surprised that neither one of you are learning sign language. He can still learn to talk while signing, all you need to do is talk to him as if he has no hearing loss and sign at the same time. At 3 he should be signing like a typical 3yo talks. You need a way to communicate with your child or it will be extremely difficult to teach him anything! Dont want to offend you but maybe you should get a therapist that is eager to teach your son signs and words. That is what he needs

Consult your doctor to see if the hearing disability will intefere. If it doesn't matter then you can start at anytime you feel the child is ready.

put cherrios in the toilet and let dad show him how to ring them!
its fun for them and encourages them to use. also a drop of dishwashing detergent in the bowl makes bubbles, again let dad show him how. they love it! good luck
