There are many factors that have an effect, genetics is 1, then there are biological and environmental issues. Drug use also factors in. But a lot of the hoopla associated with drug use and retardation/gene problems is just that; Hoopla. I used 5,000+ of hits of LSD in addition 2 many more bowls+joints of herb since the 80z and had 3 beautiful, intelligent children. Of course my kids did come from a good genetic heritage. The prospect of adoption would greatly enhance your chances of having the child U raise be mentally unblemished!! Best of luck 2 U!! Timothy :o)

There are a larger number of individuals with mh/mr for various reasons, one is the advancement in health care and treatment. Children could not survive 50 years ago with the same disorders that they have today. Seizures could kill children 50 years ago, but the advancement of anti-seizure meds can control most seizures. Another factor is that parents are less afraid to take their children out in todays society. Society today knows and understands that children and adults have disabilities and no longer believe that the parents caused it or could have prevented it.

There are many reasons. Lack of oxygen to the brain is a major cause whether its due to an accident at birth or premature birth. Drugs, legal and illegal are a huge contributing factor, including alcohol. Genetics plays a role as well as age of the parents. Other birth illnesses can contribute.
