why not..if you find something that somebody collects what difference does it make where it came from. I've found all kinds of collectible stuff at garage sales, thrift stores etc...

I think that is a very tacky thing to do unless................ It is a collectible of some sort that the person your giving the gift to collects. Other then that I feel a gift should be as thoughtful as you can make it. Put yourself in the person receiving the gifts shoes............................Would you want a used item for a present. If you are going to purchase something at a garage sale or a second hand store then give it to the person just as a I was think of you gift. Don't make it a Birthday or Christmas or another special occasion gift.

this sounds bad but yes I did, it was for my mother in law, no I was not being mean about anything, she collects these special tins and I found some real neat ones at a 2nd hand store, you can't buy these items new so I bought them there and gave them to her, of course she loved them, but I don't think if a person finds good things at a garage sale or second hand store that they can't give it for a gift, It shouldn't be where or how much is spent on a gift to make the occasion special,

I have not, but friends have. One got sacks and sacks of jewelry findings and beads from a lady who was tired of the jewelry making business. She used them to make gifts for others. Another buys things, gives them as gifts, and tells the person, I knew you would want/like this. I got it at a yard sale for xbucks. She buys several gifts for the price of one in a store.
And yard sales are great to find collectables. People collect something, and get tired of it, or are moving and have to get rid of it, or pass away, and the kids do not want it.
I have a friend you lives in a upper middle class community where there is an alley, and dumpsters. People make a living dumpster diving for glass and metal, she talked to the glass people, they live on and sent their kids to college, and live in a fancy house, not in the neighborhood, and drive nice cars. All on the glass money and their regular jobs, they are now retired, early, and still do the glass collection.. My friend finds stuff all the time. A pair of like new louvered doors were restained, and hang on her bedroom door. She saw a chandelier, but did not go back to get it.

Depending on for who. I had a daughter in law that loves old things and loves it when I find something different at a yard sale or thrift store. She is well aware of the place I got it from. Now other people I haven't done it but would consider it if the item was something they would like.

No. But my parents often find me some really cool gifts when they go antiquing. That's all 2nd hand stuff.
I don't see a problem with it if the item in question is in good condition or is a collectable. You can find some real treasures.

Yes I have. My sister likes the retro thing. She collects different things but one is the old grape clusters of the 1960's and 1970's. Can't get them new anymore so I bought them at an antique and used shop and gave them as a gift and she loved it!

sure i often browse garage sales and second hand stores for antiques, if they need repair or refinishing i have that done and then give them as a gift...most ppl love to get antiques and its not something they would often buy for themselves. as to just a normal gift, only if it were still in the package and in excellent condition just like in a store.

yes, if it looks new or "like new." But in most cases it was a "just because" gift for someone who also likes shopping garage sales. They generally knew it was secondhand.
