Most are too lazy or in a hurry to answer the question first.

I can understand why some younger, more impatient folks might post in a hurry, especially if they are using text messaging from a cellphone (this is annoying but I understand why it is done.). People who speak and write English as a second or third language I can understand not spelling everything correctly either, but as another answerer said, they often take more care and spell better than many native speakers.

I always try to think of these possibilities, and I don't automatically bash someone for having exceedingly bad spelling or grammar. It is hard on the eyes and the brain after awhile, though. Also, for those of you who are not native English speakers/writers, if I can understand what you are trying to say in English, you're doing really well and I applaud you! I can't say that I would have the same facility in another language.

It is the native English speakers who should know how to speak and write their own language that really get to me after awhile...

Oddly enough I've found people who know English as a second language spell better that people who learned it as the first.

Aside from laziness, I also think a part of it has to due with a change in educational philosophy. About 20 to 30 years ago educators started to believe that learning to read and write was as natural for children as learning to speak. So schools stopped investing the time and energy in teaching children grammar and spelling. The result being that we now have a generation that cannot spell ot use grammar properly. This might be one reason.

Well its not really necessary. I mean the human brain is capable of reading between the lines,w/out a prblem Plus when you want to answer a question I like to answer it as fast as i can b/c sometimes I forget what I was saying, and i forgt to spell check along the way. But i can see when it can get kind of annoying, when you cant understand half of what people say in here. So I guess we are almost close to the same page. Take Care.

They just do not care to spell correctly, which is a reflection on them. And the fact they can use spell check, with just a click, the really says something.
I will not even answer some questions, due to the spelling and grammar, not to mention to intelligence level and immature subject level.

I'm Sorry, I can't really answer this question, since I can spell, and I use the spell check too!! I've actually been wondering the same thing myself?

I Think perhaps many of the users are not "English as a First Language Americans"? That could be one explanation?

Or else maybe they just dropped out of School, and in fear of a draft, they don't want to get "Stuck In Iraq", so they are Hiding out on their Mom's computer??

Or they're just lazy.
I'm telling you tho.... For a long time now... MANY high school graduates CANNOT SPELL. It is an atrocity if you ask me!!
(Tell us please! What is your excuse? not you!!!... Them!!)

Many of us have grown lazy when using the computer. We use messenger and try to go so fast sometimes that we don't take time to look what we have typed. And I know there are lots of people that simply have trouble spelling.

Basically, because of falling education standards. I read today that the examining boards are happy to accept 'texting language', but it won't necessarily earn marks in an exam.
It's just as well that I'm not in the position of marking exams, because I'm afraid I'd be too hard on ANYONE who failed to use the English language correctly.

To use spell check requires effort. Many people who use Yahoo Answers just scrawl what they think will get their question across.
Grammar be dammed.

Yes, especially with spell check! I've wondered that myself. It's hard to take someone seriously who can't figure that one out.
