Im 22 and have been out of college for over 1 year. My parents provide no financial assistance; yet the government and school won't provide me with aid because of my parents income. The estimated family contribution is too high. I work monday-friday 9-6 and cant make ends meet as is. I have terrible credit and no shot at school loans or grants. I have wanted to finish school and i am in my junior year. Because i was working 3 jobs to pay for school my grades dropped tremendously and i was put on academic probation. I have the determination and drive to make something of myself, just cant find a way to afford living and going to school. I am nobody special- i have no family involved in organizations who provide scholarships & my grades arent good enough to be awarded. I was recently accepted to the university i wanted to attend & am so excited but i dont know how i will afford it. Can anybody give me any advice? I appreciate any help on my problem. Just cant find a way to succeeding:(

Have you applied for student loans? I, too was ineligible to receive grants because of my parents' income. I paid for my undergraduate degree with hard work and student loans. Pretty much anyone can receive a Stafford or Perkins loan, regardless of their credit history. You should talk with the financial aid office of your school. They can help you with the paperwork and inform you of your options.

Well first of all you have to get a grip of the real situation. The cost of living in some places is really high. From your post I assume that you have no idea how many homeless people actually have college degrees. The number is huge. They are not all criminals, you have really generalized this. There are lots of homeless people with Master's degrees because they cannot find work and pay to have a home. Many homeless people do go to school. Even more go to community places that help them out with food and finding a place to live.

you could try to get unsubsidized student loans. your credit is not an issue with student loans unless you have defaulted on one before. Believe me, I know, my husband had filled bankruptcy in his previous marriage and he was still able to get subsidized loans. you might not be able to get subsidized with your parents income, but you could possibly get unsubsidized. Just talk to the financial aid advisor at the school you are wanting to attend and tell the the situation. They will give you any advice they know about. You might could even try to get a student loan through Sallie Mae. Especially if you could possibly get your parents to co-sign since they won't pay. Sallie Mae will do it with a co-signer no matter what your credit. Just talk to financial aid and maybe give Sallie Mae a call. I am sure you can at least find a way to get a loan somewhere. Good luck to you.

try going to school part time, you know a few credit hours a week and in no time you will have your degree :) I know it's rough. Part time schooling is my plan for after I graduate in dec with my first degree. Then my parents refuse to pay so i'm going to save as much as i can between dec and august and hopefully have enough to take 3-6 credits, just to start earning my teaching degree :) I hope this helps...good luck

bad news, your not yet 24 and can't claim independent status.

now you can talk with school and ask if they make certain exception but I expect they won't.

Its one issue that unfortunately the feds failed to recognize. some kids have parents who refuse to help, their income should not be taken into account

Talk to your financial adviser at school. You may want your parents to stop claiming you as a dependent on their tax returns.

Take care
