Really, it just boils down to appearance, and which appearance you like better - long or short hair. The dogs are VERY similar. Both are suited for the water, both are intelligent, good with children, eager to please and similar in size. I have a Golden, but would highly recommend either breed.

It depends on what you want it to do.
Both are sweet and loveable. Both make great companions. Both can be obedient and well trained.

I think the GR is a better obedience breed than the Lab (look at the number of GR with obedience titles.)
The lab can be slightly more independent and make decisions on his own . This is why they are good guide dogs for the blind---if the blind person says "go" and the lab sees it is not safe, it won't go because its got the gumption to refuse an unsafe command.

A GR sheds longer fur. Labs shed but the hair is shorter.

Both have similar temperaments and are very people oriented dogs . Also both grow to full size in about a year but remain puppy like for about 3 mentally. In my opinion both dogs are great family pets and it's just to close to call or pick a best of the 2 breeds . In fact many consider them of the same breed but they are different . Either dog would make an equally great pet , though they aren't known as good watchdogs they will bark when they notice something they find suspicious and both are good around kids , as puppies they are a bit clumsy and can knock a small child down so they should be supervised till both learn to get along with one another.

They are both great dogs. I have a Yellow Lab. I love Goldens too. But for my money it the Lab. Golden's have alot more hair which sheds. Labs shed too, but not as much. Other than that, they'r equal in my book.

Both are hunters, these breeds like to chase things, anything like butterflies, birds or cars, and they both need tons of exercise, so get ready to run. These are working dogs that need obedience training before they become easy to care for... and did you know that obedience training is largely for the protection of the dog!!!

I like the loyal Labs clean lines and short hair and think they're faster on their feet and more playful.

They are very similar dogs, with similar bloodlines. Really, for the best dog, get a mutt. Pure breed dogs tend to be inbred, even good breeders cannot completely eliminate inbreeding, since all of the bloodlines are tied together in some way.

Mutts are usually better behaved dogs, and MUCH cheaper. You can also save a life by getting one from the pound, so you won't only be gaining a companion, but also saving it from death.

Good luck!

it depends on what kind of dog you are looking for. if you want a loyal, smart, sweet dog, a lab would be your best choice. I have always wanted one. I have a shitzu-poodle mix because I don't have enough space for a bigger dog but I will get a black lab when I have more space.
