I was at youth group, and we had an interesting discusion about when Jesus was at the temple talking to the priests and teachers. When his parents came all worried, Jesus said along the lines of "You should have known I was going to be at my fathers house.". Some people in the youth group said it sounded like Jesus was being a smart alic and he diobeyed God by disrespecting his parents. I thought it was an interesting thought, what are your thoughts and opinions?

One girl in the youth group suggested that maybe we still don't have a real understanding of sin, since Jesus ws without sin.

I believe the commandment was, honor thy mother and father. It doesn't mention not being a smartalec.

Then again, why couldn't JC have been making a joke? There are so many views, and yet, the idea is, He was God made flesh, walking the earth as a man. So, why assume that there was no sense of humor? Sigh, there just is too much seriousness, and pentupness involved.

No he was not disrespecting his parents. He may have honestly thought with all the overwhelming evidence that they should have known where he was. He is God the Father's son after all. Didn't Joseph receive a dream that told of who his Father was? Wasn't that why he chose not to divorce Mary? Didn't Mary also receive Jesus after hearing the Annunciation from Gabriel and she was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit? Maybe he was just preparing them for the coming ministry he was called to do..

Good question. I think a lot of believers have debated it. Remember, Jesus is the sinless Son of God. He was about His Heavenly Father's business at all times. He did obey his parents when He returned to Nazareth with them . This incident in the bible seemed to be a turning point of sorts from boyhood to manhood for Jesus. I realize that twelve years old seems awfully young, but Jesus was and is fully God and fully man. Instead of looking as it as disrespect, think of it as the time when Mary and Joseph were starting to let go . All parents go through it. Up to this point, they obviously knew He was the Son of God , but possibly the realization of this started to hit home.

Jesus is never disrespectful to His parents because He always "Honors His Mother and Father" as the Commandment says.

First of all he cant disobey God If he is God. Second he was not being a smart alic was comforting his mother and reassuring her that he would not go to a place that she would disobey of. Now in your youth group you should be taught that Jesus lives a clean life and that he never sinned for if he had he would not have been able to offer himself as our savior on the cross and forgive us for our sins

It depends on how you look at it. It may sound disrespectful to you if you look at Mary and Joseph as His parents, but to me, He was telling them that God is His Father and that He has to be about God's business.
