I wanted to buy a gun for training hunting dogs. I never trained dogs before, and was looking for one that fires blanks. Does anyone know where to get one of those and the price range for the gun and blanks? What's the best brand?

Bound's hubby here:

I took my Lab pup to a rifle match with me when she was about 5 or 6 months old, and had her on the firing line while I was scoring (and yes, she was on a leash!). She just flopped down between two riflemen as I was scoring, and turned to look at each one as they fired at the 600 yard line. She never flinched, but seemed happy as a pig in crap!

If you are local to some form of shooting range, take your pup to it when there is shooting ... if he/she is a decent gun dog, your pup will not be afraid of the reports, and you should not even have to go the expense of a training pistol!

Good Luck!

We are training our bird dog (puppy) right now and what we do is while he throws the bait, I band on a pan w/a spoon just once and loud. The pup gets used to the noise and we can train in our back yard. (we live in town, can't shoot a gun there). So far he is doing good. Good luck.

You can get trainers for retrievers that use a small cap... it can be a blank, or one that actually fires a dummy that the dog must track and retrieve.Check any large scale pet store and it will likely be available, or they will know where to direct you.

Try Cabela's. I have seen them as low as 20 dollars. Happy training.

don't waste your money take the dog with you to the range to target shoot if the dog runs away he is gun shy will take allot of time to get him out of it if he stays put you have a good hunting dog then start training him on retrieving and pointing
