I am planning to buy a new car from a dealer in South Carolina, but I am a Florida resident... Do I have to pay tax ? Is there a benefit of doing so ?
Thanks

You are responsible for tax only in the state in which you reside. The dealer usually collects the tax you pay and forwards the proceeds to the proper tax authority. If the dealer allows you to pay the taxes directly to your tax office, they will forward paperwork stating the amount of the car and your county, municipality, city, etc will determine the amount of tax you owe. If you do not pay the taxes in a timely manner, they will find out eventually and send you a bill. Trust me, I'm still getting bills for the previous tenant who bought a car over a year ago in South Carolina. I live in Georgia. Good luck!

I live in WA state, a state with sales tax, but washington doesn't have it.

If I buy a car in Oregon, I pay taxes in Washington. Sales tax is only paid as part of registration-- dealerships do this for you, or if you buy it from an individual, you pay the taxes when you bring it back and try to change the registration.

If you take delivery of the car in SC, then you will have to pay SC tax. Depending on how much SC sales tax you paid, you may also owe FL tax. It depends on the reciprocity agreement that FL has with SC. If the FL tax would have been more than the SC tax, then you will have to pay the difference.

You should be able to avoid the tax in SC because you are taking the car out of state. You would then pay tax to FL.

I live in Indiana, I have bought cars in Ohio. The sales tax was paid at the time when I went to the license branch to get my tags. (plates)

It depends what the dealer wants to do.
For instance when I purchased my truck in Texas, I asked if they could charge me NM tax (I live in NM) since tax in NM is lower, and he did.
