My 1 year old cockapoo is deathly afraid of bathes, and has a pathological fear of water yet she'll gladly go in lake water as long as she can touch the bottom of the lake bed. But still, is that normal in dogs?

I have to sit in my bathing suit in the tub and hold her down so she can't run out, she won't even sit in the water! And I must admit, shes a powerful little dog, so giving her a bath is a dreaded chore in my household.

yes. there is nothing wrong with your dog. most all dogs are afraid of water except for most retrieving breeds (lab,st. bernard, etc.,) there is nothing to be overly concerned about.

My husky dog wasn't afraid of water when we first got her, but my b/f decided to let her loose (during winter month in Maine) and she fell into the ice water and had disappeared for a few seconds, My feet were already in the freezing water to grab her and I did get her and threw her over my shoulder. To this day she hates water, doesn't like to be out in the rain. Bathe time, is getting easier cause I have a cousin who has a business that bathes dogs, clips their nails and whatever else needs to be done. Since taking her to my cousin, her fear of water isn't as bad as it used to be. May I suggest taking her to a place that gives bathes a few times, by then hopefully your dog will get used to it. Oh yeah, I still can't get my dog to go swimming, bathes is as close to water as I can get her. Good luck

I have a Redbone Coonhound and they are normally water dogs, but he HATES the water. I have to tie him the the soap dish that is attached to the wall so he won't get out of the tub.

As far as swimming in the lake, he won't go near the water. He locks his body up.

Of course he was a rescue dog that was horribly abused. I'm not sure what happened to cause this fear.

It sounds like it a fear of the bathtub for your dog and it's normal for dogs to be unsure if their feet aren't touching.

Just like people it depends on their experiences and their personality. My brothers dog is such a sweet heart. He has a pool and she usually ignors it. When people come over to swim she jumps the fence and take off. I think someone threw her in. My dog loves to wade into the lake, but scratches at the bath tub.

don't worry my dog is also deadly afraid of water. if I hold her above any water besides her water dish she starts doing doggie paddle. so you have nothing to worry about. what helps is to pet your dog often in the water and calm him/her down. Oh and give him/hier a treat afterward to show that they were good. and don't let him/her go outside before he/her is completely dry because dogs have a tendancy to roll around in the dirt after being cleaned. hope my advice works!b

my belgium shep LOVED water until she was forced into a bath at the kennel, then she hated it. my springer spaniel/lab never liked water. not even the rain.

my new aussy shep pup hates water, but is courious about the pool and fell in once and swam for about 10 seconds so we think we have a chance with her maybe liking it one day.

Every dog is different...just like people. I had a chiauaua that would freak out, but my mutt loves the water. Maybe she had a bad experience or doesnt like to swim.

i don't think it is uncommon, as my dog is also scared of water. we've resolved this by bathing her outside with the waterhose. works well in the summer anyway... i suppose we will have to use a groomer in the winter!
best of luck.
