the rush hour tow zone sign says it is from 7-10am, and the meter says it is from 8am-6pm. i didnt see the tow zone sigh, paid the meter and within 5 minutes my car was towed.
should i contest the parking ticket and also try to get back my towing fees?

You could try, but it will probably just cost you more money in court costs in the end anyway, from experience I have learned that you could have all the evidence in your favor, and the judge will still side with the police, at least your car was not damaged and was in piece when you gt it back. I had mine towed unlawfully recently, and they really ****** it up!!!! Good luck!!!! I hope you don't live in Illinois, if so don't EVEN bother trying to fight it, no contest!!!!

Always contest your tickets.

Often, those are checked off in an office and dropped without further questions

You won't win if you contest it. Ignorance of the law does not hold up in court.
