All species of animals mature at different rates.. for a mouse, 3 years old is the equivalent of a human 80 year old..and yet tortoise can way outlive humans..
So, what we call dog years, is the best we can do to compare the aging and maturity to what we are most familiar with in our life-cycle..
dog years are close to > 10.5 years of comparative maturity for the first 2 years, and about 4 dog years per human year thereafter..

Because dogs have much shorter lives than humans. A dog can have pups when it is 2 so that is like being a teen. Dogs rarely live longer than 10 years.

This is interesting. When you are young you have an animal and it passes on. Sad. So you get another animal. It also passes after many years. Again very sad.You move on later in life and get another animal. Doesn't make a differance, dog, cat. Then you realize you have many more years left with that animal. As you age, myself at 50 years old, gets a new kitten. Now we age at the same rate. It catches up with you. So when I'm 70 years old, close to the end, the kitten is now 20 years old and also close to death. We are aging in real time now.Who out lives who? Its kinda off topic but still something to think about.

Because they dont live for 80 years like humans do. Dog years is a relative ratio to human years, figuring in that they live shorter lives.

it's to make a comparison with human ages, since dogs age faster. a 3 year old dog is in similar health to a 21 year old human.

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept it's awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan...."
I can't imagine a better way of putting it. All we can do is enjoy the most time possible in this brief eternity that we have with them.

Dogs age 7 times as fast as people do. They're estimated life span is 7 times shorter than ours. Get it?
