Traditional additions are dark rum, brandy, or bourbon. I like dark rum the best - but use dark, not white rum! I can't imagine it would be very good with vodka. The brown liquors have some body and flavor that can stand up to the 'nog, and also add that nice warmth that vodka just doesn't have.

I would recommend a good Brandy like Germain Robin. The sweetness of Brandy goes super great with the eggnog and it's not too overwhelming. Sprinkle a little nutmeg in each cup for a nice colorful touch. Enjoy!

Here is a recipe for you:

Eggnog - Spiked recipe

Ingredients

12 eggs
3 pints heavy cream
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 cup bourbon whiskey
1 cup cognac
1/2 tsp salt

Separate the eggs. In an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks with the sugar until thick and lemon colored. Slowly add the bourbon and cognac, while beating at slow speed. Chill several hours. Add the salt to the egg whites and beat until almost stiff, or until the beaten whites form a peak that bends slightly. Whip the cream until stiff. Fold the whipped cream into the yolk mixture, then fold in the beaten egg whites. Chill one hour. When ready to serve, sprinkle the top with freshly grated nutmeg.

A quality Kentucky bourbon is by far the best addition to eggnog, and its a holiday tradition.

Every year at my in laws we toast Christmas to "fancy" eggnog and I always look forward to it being released in the grocery stores.

It depends on what flavor you're looking for. If you want to give it a minty flavor, put some peppermint schnapps or goldschlager into it. If you're looking for something that won't overpower the taste of the egg nog, go with bourbon. Also, note that Smirnoff (and a few other companies probably -- but I prefer Smirnoff) makes a lot of flavored vodkas that might work well.

Rum!! And a pinch of nutmeg.
But only have one, then just drink the rum.
There's a hell of a lot of calories in eggnog!!
