This depends on many things.
What is controllable for one air line may or may not be controllable for the other.
But most of the time with little imagination and lot of ingenuity the uncontrollable can also be controlled to some extent.
eg. Southwest Arline had bought fuel futures so when all other airlines were paying a going rate of of fuel around $ 3.00/unit they were getting there fuel at around $ 1.50 per/unit. So when every one was loosing money they still had the profits.
