I know I can. But on the other hand, I've seen plenty of theists that appeared to be incapable of it.

Not that I accept the premise, but saying that God is love is not the same as saying that Love is God. Love is an emotion felt by most humans (and perhaps the lower animals, too). Some conceive of God as composed entirely of Love, but that doesn't mean that Love is composed of God.
S.K. Chan46: "Atheists' love is worthless in the eyes of God."
Pity your God is so heartless. I do not believe that love is ever worthless.

There is a difference that needs to be understood. "Love" as "Being" and "Love" as "an action". HUGE difference here!
When St. John said that "God is Love" - he was not saying that Love is something that God "does" (i.e., an action in the human sense) - Love is what God IS! Pure Love.
There is a Trinitarian principle at work here. God is Love. The Father eternally loves the Son, the Son eternally loves the Father...and that love is the Holy Spirit, "which proceeds from the Father and the Son", according to the Nicene Creed, and St. Augustine of Hippo.
We are made in the image of God and that same Holy Trinity. Body, Mind, Spirit.
"To love" is an action. We are made in the image of God, giving us, as God's creation, the ability "to love"...whether atheists believe in God or not, makes no difference in the process.
Free will and the ability to love are testimonies to God's existence and His Love, IMHO.

I've known lots of people who believe in God have a very sick definition of what love is, and lots more that can't love anyone other than themselves. So I really think belief or disbelief in God has nothing to do with your ability to love.

Because God = love is not absolute. There are other ways of loving than God.

- Certainly an atheist can love, but then you have to ask what do you love.
- God loves His creations - atheist love what God has created.
- God loves all & doesn't want any to perish - atheist love themselves & only things of the flesh which will perish.
- God teaches us of things concerning the flesh & the spirit - atheist are concerned only about the happiness of the flesh
& neglect the spirit.
- God teaches us that the flesh dies but the spirit is everlasting - atheist care nothing about the sprit that sustains life.

We are all capable.
