I was just like that. I still hate going to someplace new because I know I'll get nervous. Just tell yourself you have to go and once you get there and get settled, the nerves will come down. I forced myself to go places I didn't want to and I slowly just started to get used to it. You'll be OK.

Try disassociating yourself. Pretend it isn't you who is working the cash register. Pretend you are just acting like a person doing it. Or pretend it is another version of you doing it. Internally, be as shy as you want to about it. Externally, just do it. You'll find that, as you do it, you'll actually become less shy about it.
Another way to overcome shyness is to join Toastmasters Intl. This is a club that teaches you how to speak in public, which is one of the most fearful things to do. Statistics show that of all of people's major fears, speaking in public ranks higher than dying.
This group is very non-confrontational and very helpful. You have a small group of people that you know to speak in front of. This will alleviate your shyness as you get more used to speaking. I was in Toastmasters for quite a while and saw people come in shy and leave self-confident. Some would give their first speech at a whisper. Later, they would speak out strongly and confidently.

I always considered myself to be a shy person..even through out high school..now after I left high school my first job was as in a store..and I thought the same thing..I am so shy how can I possible deal with these customers..but what i learn is that I love dealing with people..I am now 29yrs. old
you will over come your shyness as time goes by..I am assuming that you are like 20 or so...
just be friendly towards the customers..

Find something that you can handle and do it.
By doing something in public-that will breed a little confidence in you. the more stuff you do like working and talking in public-the easier it will become.
Remember-if your working at a clothing store -the public there wants your help and opinions. They need you to be there otherwise they can't finish their shopping.

Relax, take a deep breath, and tell yourself that you can do this. I use to have this problem and that's what I did and it worked. I know someone who would freak out and wouldn't go places, now he needs to be medicated. So just relax and do it.
