I have worked with oak. It is excellent for cabinets. Alder is a little softer but you shouldn't have any problems with it. I haven't used it for cabinets. Pick the the one u rather the look of the wood cause u will live with it for a long time. Good luck

Oak is VERY strong, and is much more lovely. Oak stands up better to cracking, and loose boarding after it ages. So it will last longer.

either works. but consider which grain you like best! oak has a very heavy grain pattern once it's stained. something like maple is favored by a lot of people because it has a cleaner more classic look.

Oak is the best.
But it ultimately doesn't matter provided you have a good sealant to apply. (clear, stain, or paint)
